Catering to participants with disabilities
Jenson8 strives to provide a great experience for all users, regardless of their physical abilities. We offer a number of ways to make our Virtual Reality experiences more inclusive.
Some participants will not be able to participate in headset for a variety of reasons:
- Visual impairment – participants with visual impairments may not be able to wear a VR headset and take full advantage of the stereoscopic 3d vision
- Physical disabilities – some participants may not be able to fully participate in VR due to limited mobility
- Headsets inducing nausea – a small number of participants find the very nature of VR induces nausea or vertigo. Whilst our experiences are designed to minimise this possibility but for some participants the effect may be so strong they are unable to wear a headset at all.
The headset settings listed below may help to overcome some of these problems. Participants who are unable to use VR at all may take part on the desktop versions of Apollo and Boomerang. All roles are available on Boomerang Desktop, however only B and C roles are currently available for Apollo Desktop.
Wheelchair users and other seated participants
These participants may be able to fully participate in VR. If they are able to wear a headset and use one (or both) controller(s), whilst still being able to navigate the guardian boundary space, they can be included in VR as usual. Wheelchair users should be allocated a larger boundary than offered as standard to accommodate their wheelchair. Seated participants may use a wheeled office chair to allow them to move around the space, assuming a risk assessment of the site and user deems this a safe option. Participants in stationary chairs can participate in the B & C roles only.
- Height adjust. This allows seated participants can appear at a similar head-height to their fellow participants in the virtual world. This setting is found in Settings -> Accessibility -> Mobility -> Adjust Height. When switched on, the virtual head-height of the participant is increased by roughly 1.2 metres or 4 feet. This setting should be used with caution; the participant may be unable to reach items dropped on the floor as the virtual floor will be below the real-world floor
Controller adjustments
There are several settings you can change to allow for different uses of the Oculus controller. These settings can be found in found in Settings -> Devices -> Controllers. Jenson8 experiences do not require many controls, mainly the front trigger and the joystick, plus the Universal Menu button for resetting position if required. If required you can re-map the trigger button or switch the Universal Menu Button (Oculus/Meta button) to the left controller.
Audio adjustments
Quest headsets feature a number of audio adjustment settings that could be of help to participants with hearing impairments.
- Audio Balance – For participants with differing levels of hearing in either ear, audio balance can be adjust to provide a more accurate stereo sound experience. Move the slider left or right to increase the relative volume of either the left or right headphone. This setting can be found in Settings -> Accessibility -> Hearing -> Audio Balance.
- Mono Audio – For participants with full hearing loss on one side, it may be beneficial to turn on Mono Audio. This means audio from both the left and right sides will be played in both headphones, enabling them to hear voice communications they might otherwise miss on the impaired side. This setting can be found in Settings -> Accessibility -> Hearing -> Mono Audio.
Visual adjustments
Quest features a number of Vision settings that can be of help to participants with visual impairments.
- Colour Correction – When enabled, the Colour Correction setting allows the use of several different colour filters that may help colour blind participants to better perceive colour differences in headset. This setting can be found in Settings -> Accessibility -> Vision -> Colour Correction
- Text Size – The Text Size setting allows you to adjust the size of text in the Oculus menus. This setting can be found in Settings -> Accessibility -> Vision -> Text Size
- Contrast – The Contrast slider allows you to adjust the contrast of images displayed in the headset. This setting can be found in Settings -> Accessibility -> Vision -> Contrast
