How Much Space is Required for a Jenson8 VR Workshop?

For a VR workshop, a headset will be required for each participant, and each headset requires a dedicated clear space for the user to safely navigate themselves through Jenson8 experiences. This space is known as a guardian boundary.

Here are our space guidelines (per-headset):

Optimal

  • 3m x 3m (or larger) guardian boundary for each headset.
  • Allow extra space for a table, equipment, and seating.

The optimal set up has key advantages over our minimum requirements. Each headset has plenty of space, which allows users to easily navigate Jenson8 experiences and minimises the need to adjust (re-center) the boundary mid-play. Players also have their own headset for the entire workshop, rather than needing to rotate.

Minimum

  • 2m x 3m guardian boundary for each A player position.
  • 1.5m x 1.5m guardian boundary for each B/C player position.
  • Allow extra space for a table, equipment, and seating.

These minimum requirements allow you to fit more guardian boundaries in a smaller space. These smaller boundaries may need adjusting (re-centering) throughout the session. A players must be able to roam in their environment, however B and C players can play while standing/sitting still, so they can operate in smaller boundaries if required. This means that participants will rotate between spaces and use a different headset for each role they are playing.

See more information on A/B/C player roles here.

Further Space Considerations

There are a few scenarios in which a space with a seemingly appropriate square meterage may not be suitable. Ensure that you receive a floor plan with measurements beforehand, and look out for the following:

  • Pillars and fixed furniture which may obstruct guardian boundaries.
  • Spaces which are not rectangular will likely have sections you cannot utilise for guardian boundaries.
  • Areas which have a sloped floor, stairs or other trip hazards such as cables or rugs are not suitable for guardian boundaries.

Workshop Space Guideline Example for Apollo (12 participants, 4 players in each role)

  • Optimum - 120m² provides each participant with a full optimum boundary (3x3m) + extra.
  • Giving each user a full boundary in a smaller space - 90m² provides each participant with a minimum boundary for use as an A player.
  • Rotating users in a smaller space - 80m² provides an optimum boundary (3x3m) for 4 A players and smaller boundaries (2x2m) for 8 B/C players + extra.
  • Minimum - 50m² provides a minimal boundary (2x3m) for 4 A players, and 8 smaller boundaries (1.5x1.5m) for B/C players  + extra.

(note that square meterage provided is a guideline, you may need more depending on the layout of your space, as covered in Further Space Considerations)
